New Partnership Launches “Battle of the Bulge”

Committed to putting an end to equine obesity across the UK by 2035, Spillers and Redwings Horse Sanctuary, the largest horse welfare charity in the UK, have teamed up to launch “Battle of the Bulge”.

Like people, horses gain excess weight when they consume more energy (calories) than they burn. Wherever possible, preventing excess weight gain is by far the best strategy but if your horse has piled on the pounds you are certainly not alone; it is estimated that obesity rates may be as high as 70% in some groups. Restricting energy (calorie) intake is the key to weight loss but whilst the theory may sound simple, we know that taking control of your horse’s waistline can be far from easy in practice.

Building upon their ongoing education efforts through the SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club, the partnership are on a mission to spread awareness, empower owners, and make a tangible difference in the lives of horses and ponies. The club provides horse owners and yard owners practical support and camaraderie for those caring for overweight horses and ponies, to aid them on their weight loss journey.

With over 11,000 horse owners and yard owners already onboard, the Slimmers’ Club is more than just a community—it’s a force for change. But they are not stopping there. They are determined to reach even more horse owners, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to identify and combat excess weight effectively.
